Team Tutti Travels: Brazil

The pulse of a rhythm is the part that you can tap your foot or nod your head to. In popular music, the pulse can usually be counted in groups of 4. Have you ever heard a musician count to 4 before playing? That is the musician setting the pulse.

Dr M has provided an example below. Notice how the drum hits, particularly the snare, are played in between the pulse of the rhythm. This is called syncopation! Can you count the pulse of the rhythm (1, 2, 3, 4) as the song is playing?

Why not have a go creating a syncopated rhythm yourself in the next tab!
